These two beautiful cities on the atmospheric Moselle river have come up with something special. The residents had the idea of a romantic light festival that is unparalleled. The Christmas markets start at the end of November. Traben-TrarbachThe Moselle Wein-Nachts-Market of Traben-Trarbach goes underground: the Christmas market takes place in the wine cellars of the winemakers and hotels. A total of 3,000 square metre underground is home to local innkeepers, international artisans and exhibitors. Here you can stroll in the atmospheric semi-darkness past the many stands with regional delicacies, Christmas gifts, handicrafts, fashion and jewelry. And there is plenty of room, because at the end of the 19th century Traben-Trabach was an important wine trading centre. After Bordeaux in France, they were the most important in the world. Cellars have been built under large parts of the city centre. More extensive than in any other city along the Moselle river. Traben is an old town that was first mentioned in documents in 830. In 1815 it became part of Prussia and since 1904 it has been one municipality with Trarbach. The population of this city is an integral part of the entire organisation: living information columns serve as a guide for visitors and provide individual background information. Be sure to take one of the thematic tours of the city's underground and above-ground architecture. The Art Nouveau architecture of Bruno Möhring is striking, who built a bridge gate and a few houses and villas here. Bernkastel-KuesIn Bernkastel-Kues, the old town is the centre for the Christmas market. Surrounded by half-timbered houses from the 17th century, a lot of exhibitors and craftsmen are spread across the alleys in and around the medieval market square. In the window of the Adler pharmacy, one of the historic half-timbered houses, a door will be opened every day from the beginning of December, followed by an artistic performance. At the Christmas market you can treat yourself to everything you could wish for: mulled wine, pastries, crêpes and waffles, and for the Christmas atmosphere at home: candles, decorations and handicrafts. You can easily visit both markets in one day - a shuttle bus runs from one city to another in twenty minutes. The Moselle region has so much more to offer. But if you first want to experience the unique atmosphere of the region around the river that cuts through the landscape, then the end of the year is a beautiful and unique opportunity to explore the versatile landscape, culture and history of the Moselle region.
