Czechia presents itself as an active destination and the increasing number of cycling and hiking enthusiasts visiting the country is also noticed by the Czech Tourist Board. "With its extensive network of hiking and cycling trails, Czechia is a fantastic destination for an active holiday", says Petra Paleckova, director of CzechTourism Benelux. Central Bohemia: Elbe Cycle Route and Bohemian KarstVeronika Sticková, based in Prague, works for the tourist board of the Central Bohemian region, the area around Prague. The region, covering 11,000 km², is incredibly diverse. "Castles, historic towns, vineyards and rivers - our region offers tremendous diversity", says Veronika. While you won't find high mountains here, there are five protected natural areas. Most places are within an hour's reach from Prague, making it easy to combine a city trip with an excursion outside the centre. Veronika's favourite hiking spot is the Bohemian Karst, a forested area with beautiful viewpoints, well-marked hiking trails and castles. Her colleague Lucie Vurbsová recommends the Elbe Cycle Route for cyclists. Lucie says, "Our region boasts numerous river paths, but the most developed one is the Elbe Cycle Route. The many attractions, monuments and charming towns along the route make it very appealing." The route runs from the source of the Elbe through Central Bohemia to Germany. It's also possible to start the bicycle ride in Prague, initially following a section of the Vltava Cycle Route and then switching to the Elbe Cycle Route from Mělník. Getting lost is nearly impossible. The signage of the Elbe Cycle Route, as well as other routes in Czechia, is meticulously maintained. Ústí region: Ore Mountains and Bohemian SwitzerlandThe Elbe Cycle Route also passes through the Ústí region, an area in northeastern Czechia on the German border. "The Elbe Route is indeed a beautiful cycling route", says Lucie Druckerová of the Ústí region. But if you're looking for something different, Lucie recommends the cycling route through the Ore Mountains. The Krušnohorská cyklomagistrála follows the ridgeline of the Ore Mountains. This route is less known than the Elbe Cycle Route, making it quieter. The route connects to the Elbe Route in Děčín and goes to Karlovy Vary and Cheb. The cycling route is 246 km long. You can enjoy scenic views, as well as technical attractions, including UNESCO-listed monuments. Some interesting spots along the way are the Flaje reservoir, the rock town of Tisá and the flat-topped mountain Děčín Sněžník. Hikers can explore the Bohemian Switzerland National Park, a stunning area with beautiful natural phenomena. The park offers various hiking trails, including the long-distance Hřebenovka route. Karlovy Vary: Eger Cycle Route and Slavkov ForestVisitors have been coming to the spa region of Karlovy Vary since the 18th century. They come for the healing waters, but a spa treatment isn't just about drinking mineral water and bathing. Walking and breathing fresh air are also part of the experience. And the Karlovy Vary region offers excellent opportunities for both. Josef Slunecko, a tourism officer of the Karlovy Vary region, says there's a wide range of paths for both cyclists and hikers. The largest forest is the Slavkov Forest between the spa towns of Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně. Take a walk at Kladská or hike to one of the many lookout towers near Karlovy Vary. Josef Slunecko adds: "We have over 2,100 km of perfectly marked cycling routes. The most popular route is the Eger Cycle Route, which follows the picturesque valley of the Eger River - in Czech: Ohře - through four West Bohemian regions." Pilsen region: Baroque trails and Bohemian ForestThe city of Pilsen is the fourth largest city in Czechia. It's famous for its brewery, where the very first pilsner beer was born. "Tourists visiting the Pilsen region mainly come for our beer city, but what visitors don't know is that the region also has beautiful natural areas", says Ilona Šnebergerová, who suggests the Bohemian Forest National Park. It's the largest natural area in Czechia. Ilona also has tips for cyclists. "In our region, there are several cycling routes, such as the Baroque cycling routes in the northern part of the region. These all start and end at the same location and are about 40 km each. They are marked with the West Bohemian Baroque logo, making them easy to follow." Another suggestion is the Otava Cycle Route, a river route starting in the Bohemian Forest and ending at Zvíkov Castle in the South Bohemian region. Other long-distance routes include EuroVelo 13, also known as the Iron Curtain Route and the European long-distance cycling route CT 3 Prague - Pilsen - Regensburg. South Bohemia: river routesThe South Bohemian region is popular among tourists. The vast area offers excellent cycling and hiking opportunities. South Bohemia is traversed by the Iron Curtain Route and the Vltava Cycle Route. Alena Simková of South Bohemia Tourism also recommends the area around the town of Třeboň. "Here you'll find dozens of ponds with cycling paths alongside." Mountain bikers can enjoy themselves around Lake Lipno and in the Bohemian Forest. "There's no shortage of hiking trails", says Alena. "Whether you prefer short hikes, challenging climbs or a hiking holiday, there's plenty of choice in South Bohemia." One trail designated as 'Leading Quality Trails Best of Europe' is the Lužnice Valley Hiking Trail. This hiking trail is 55 km long and goes through the Lužnice Valley. A challenging climb is to the summit of Kleť Mountain (1083 m). "It's also possible to take a cable car up and then walk, cycle or use an outdoor step to descend", says Alena. For a fun hike with children, Alena recommends the Olšina trail in the Bohemian Forest. It's a 7 km loop on boardwalks with viewpoints and attractions. You'll find more nature trails like this in the Bohemian Forest, such as through the Jezerní Slať peat bog. Moravia-Silesia: Beskids and JeseníkFor a holiday in Moravia-Silesia, you'll have to drive a bit further. The region is located in the eastern part of Czechia, bordering Poland. "In our region, you'll find two mountain ranges: the Beskids and Jeseník. They are beautiful forested areas and especially attractive destinations for mountain bikers and hikers", says Dita Korčák of the region. In the Beskids, a hike to the summit of Radhošť Mountain is recommended. In Jeseník, the Praděd Mountain is very popular. Dita explains that there are various routes leading to Praděd Mountain, but her favourite is the one from the picturesque spa town of Karlova Studánka. Along this route, you'll follow the Bilá Opava River and traverse bridges, boardwalks and staircases. Her cycling tip is to take a bicycle ride around the Slezská Harta reservoir, located at the foot of the Jeseník Mountains. Parts of the route are paved and cyclists have the opportunity to cool off in the water and relax on small beaches. The circuit is approximately 40 km long. Dita suggests: "It's great fun to combine the bicycle ride with a boat trip on the lake."
