â– Tropical climate
Senegal has a tropical climate with hot and humid temperatures throughout most of the year. The rainy season, from May to November, is characterised by strong southeast winds, while the dry season from December to April is dominated by the dry, hot harmattan wind. Lowlands experience seasonal flooding and occasional droughts.
â– Rolling hills in the southeast
The terrain in Senegal is primarily low-lyng plains with rolling hills in the southeast. The highest peak stands at only 581 metres.
â– Senegalese dishes
Fish is a staple in Senegalese cuisine, due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Chicken, lamb, peas, eggs and beef are also commonly used, while pork is not due to the nation's predominantly Muslim population. Senegalese dishes often incorporate peanuts, the country's primary crop, along with couscous, rice, sweet patatoes, lentils, black-eyed peas and various vegetables. Meats and vegetables are usually seasoned with herbs and spices and served over rice, couscous or bread.
â– Dakar: a cultural and commercial hub
The capital and largest city of Senegal is Dakar. Its known as the cultural and commercial hub of French-speaking West Africa. The metropolitan area, home to around 4 milion people, is located on the westernmont point of the African mainland, the Cap Verte peninsula.
