Travel | Travel Read | Storytelling There’s just something about the open road, that hit of freedom when you roll the window down, turn up your favourite tunes and head into the unknown. This isn’t about ticking off destinations but about the ride, the randomness and the moments that stick. The kind of memories that don’t fit into a travel brochure. At a glance
Start loose, not cluelessYou don’t need a minute-by-minute plan. Just a loose route, an open mind and a sense of adventure. Maybe there’s a region you’ve always wanted to check out. Or someone once said, "You’ve got to see that place!" and it stuck. Grab a map or an app, but let your gut lead the way. I once rolled off the ferry from Dunkirk in France to Dover in England with zero plans, no bookings, no idea where I’d crash that night. What followed was a zigzag across southern England, picking roads at random during an entire week. It felt wild. Until border control in Dover freaked out when I couldn’t prove where I’d stayed before. My car got searched top to bottom like I was smuggling tea bags. I had to convince them I was just a writer chasing stories. This was before hashtags, brand deals and perfectly filtered travel pics took over our social media. I almost missed the ferry back to France. Pack smart, not heavyNo need to load your car like you're prepping for the apocalypse. Stick to what counts:
Sleep as you goUnless your time’s tight, skip pre-booked places. Let the road tell you when to stop. When the sun drops, scout the options: a local inn, campsite, roadside hostel or that granny’s guest room with lace curtains and solid wi-fi. No apps, just instincts. On another ride, a mate and I set out for the Vosges Mountains in France from Belgium. A "short trip" we said. We passed through Luxembourg and rolled into the Vosges, but later we meandered also through the Jura Mountains and found ourselves on the shores of Lake Geneva with a view to Switzerland. Then came the real curveball. Standing on a glacier near Mont Blanc in the Alps, snow crunching under our feet in the middle of summer. We nearly drove to Italy but turned back just before the border. Zero plans. No regrets. Fuel for body & rideNever wait until your tank’s crying for mercy. Same rule for your stomach. Remote stations are rare and often cost more. Swing by small towns for cheaper fuel and tastier bites. Local bakeries, roadside diners, tiny markets. This is where the gold is. Embrace the weirdSee a giant shoe sculpture off the road? Stop. A sign for "World’s Smallest Castle"? You bet. These are the bits that turn a road trip from decent to epic. You’ll never forget the taxidermy museum in a converted barn or that llama who looked straight into your soul. Want to feel the vibe? Those unplanned moments? They’re everything. That left turn that led to a waterfall. That detour into a forgotten town. If you want to see that vibe, check this out: a stunning cinematic road trip through Iceland, shot in 4K by Scottish filmmaker and photographer James Reaburn. It’s pure visual fuel: snowy roads, wild waterfalls, frozen landscapes and the kind of peace only the road can give. This is the vibe, where the trip becomes the whole point. Let the road winWhen your GPS says "main route", but that twisty mountain road whispers your name? Follow the whisper. You’ll get lost sometimes. But that’s where the good stuff hides. Roll with itYou’ll mess up. Miss a turn. Forget the charger. End up stuck behind a tractor for an hour. Laugh. Keep going. These are the stories you’ll retell for years. Usually over pints. Where to next?No clue. And that’s the magic. You don’t need a checklist or passport stamps to have an adventure. Just a car, a spark of curiosity and the guts to say yes to the unknown. That unexpected turn off the main road? Might be the start of your best story yet. Hanan: text • 17 April 2026 You Might Like This Loved this one? Hanan picked a few more you might like. Your voice!
