The journey begins: trail highlights and experience

â–  Day 1: Potberg to Cupidoskraal

Start your adventure at Potberg, where you’ll trek through the fynbos, a unique heathland ecosystem bursting with endemic plant species. Keep an eye out for the endangered Cape vulture colony nesting on the cliffs. This initial 15-kilometre stretch sets the tone for the diverse beauty ahead.

â–  Day 2: Cupidoskraal to Hamerkop

As you continue, the trail leads you through lush valleys and over rolling hills. The 14.7-kilometre hike is dotted with ancient rock formations and offers panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. The night is spent near the coast, where the sound of waves lulls you to sleep.

â–  Day 3: Hamerkop to Vaalkrans

Day three is a visual feast as you cover 7.8 kilometres along the shoreline. This section is a highlight for marine wildlife enthusiasts. Between June and December, the coast becomes a prime spot for southern right whale sightings, hence the trail’s name. Watching these majestic creatures breach and play in the ocean is an awe-inspiring experience.

â–  Day 4: Vaalkrans to Noetsie

The journey continues with a 10.5-kilometre hike along the rocky shores and secluded beaches. Explore tidal pools teeming with marine life and enjoy the stunning interplay of light on the sandstone cliffs.

â–  Day 5: Noetsie to Koppie Alleen

The final leg of your journey, spanning 7 kilometres, takes you to the picturesque Koppie Alleen. Here, the coastal views are unmatched and you might even spot dolphins surfing the waves or seals basking on the rocks.

A sanctuary of biodiversity: flora and fauna

The De Hoop Nature and Marine Reserve is a biodiversity hotspot. The fynbos region is home to over 1,500 plant species, including many that are found nowhere else on Earth. The reserve’s wetlands support a variety of birdlife, such as the rare blue crane and the African black oystercatcher. Marine life flourishes in the protected waters, offering glimpses of playful dolphins, seals and the iconic southern right whales.

Cultural heritage: echoes of the past

Beyond its natural beauty, De Hoop is rich in cultural history. The area is dotted with archaeological sites and historic buildings, providing a glimpse into the lives of the indigenous Khoi people and early settlers. As you walk the trail, you’re treading on paths that have been used for centuries.
